Don't Sweat the Big Stuff

Don't Sweat the Big Stuff

I spent five years living and learning in New York City, where I learned (among many things) that stress is an every day reality for people. A man-made metropolis where the people who live there eat, sleep, and breath stress. Don’t get me wrong, we all have our valid reasons to be stressed out. Typically because of the higher cost of living, but even the upper class and well-to-do’s can find something to stress about, it is marvelous.

Traffic. Rent. Fitness. Style. Shopping. Self-Esteem. Sleep. Rent. Rent. Cabs. Rent.

But then I moved to California, the San Francisco area to be more specific, and it really is not that different. Despite the flip flops and t-shirts. There is a high cost of living in any city, there are a lot of people in a small space which means it gets congested with traffic, mostly people just want to live.

Stress, it’s everywhere. And it’s not going anywhere, we take care of one great stress only to find it immediately replaced by another, so what’s the point? Why freak out? It is actually the freaking-out that does the most damage.

Breathe deep and let it go, find your peace in nature, and realize that at the end of the day you’re going to survive. You are going to rise another day, with a whole new set of challenges and stresses. It takes a conscious choice to break the pattern, to live a lifestyle where you embrace the natural world. It becomes an armor of sorts, improving all aspects of your life. Suddenly all of the big stresses seem smaller and become easier to handle. You got this. You can do this, and you have the power to change everything.

The goal of Aguaterra is to bring you this inner strength and peace, to help you conquer life’s challenges. To live the life of Aguaterra, let it go, embrace strength and beauty, and let health radiate from within.

The Spirit of Adventure

The Spirit of Adventure

Aguaterra is not your typical Natural Skincare Apothecary. Part of our whole message is about going outside, experiencing the beauty of the world, and maintaining healthy skin while doing so. That’s why we venture out to new places, to learn and to find inspiration.

Troy and I (the founders) will go for a walk with our dog (Beauregard), and stumble upon a batch of fresh rosemary, or eucalyptus, far from any public area that may be sprayed or treated with harsh chemicals. If we don’t get it ourselves we find it from local and sometimes exotic vendors, meaning they went through their own adventure to get the materials. It’s all about the adventure, or perhaps more importantly the story.

Two nights ago, I was toying with the whole concept of experience. We go through our lives with our daily routines and we often find ourselves falling into a pattern. Which is why something stupid and spontaneous can often be super fun, because…well, it’s different. It’s not that the pattern is boring, but we rarely experience things the same way we do the first time around. So that night, just as the sun was setting, I grabbed our Beau's leash and headed out to our normal walking trails behind our house.

This time I focused on paying attention to the experience of the walk. But soon I noticed it wasn’t the same. Living in the San Francisco area, we are used to the weather changing on a dime, sometimes multiple times a day, but there was an amazing difference to the trail that I just couldn’t put to words. Like it was hanging on the tip of my tongue, obvious and yet elusive. So I continued on our walk, trying to figure out why it may feel different this time.

After awhile, we reached this large outcropping of rocks, jutting from the ground like a miniature mountain. Beau and I climbed our way to the top, and all of the valley was suddenly before us. The view was simply breathtaking. The setting sun threw an orange glow onto the treetops below, transforming from typical treetops into a field of sparks and fireworks. Looking down, the hill leading up to the rock was a field of cool-fire, not really burning, but glowing as the sun’s last rays came over the far hills. A second later it disappeared entirely, and that glorious fire was immediately extinguished.

Now this is a trail that I had seen many times during the day, in full sunlight, where the trees are a bright green, and the brown brush appears dull in contrast but beautiful at the same. Just to be sure, I went and did the same walk the next morning so that image of the night before was fresh in my mind. Allowing me to compare the average experience, to this new one.

That’s when it hit me.

The change in my typical pattern, going on that particular walk but at sunset, transformed the whole walk into a new experience, just like that. This is the spirit of adventure. To break off from our beaten paths, and to learn from being spontaneous. One quick decision to switch up your normal routine can be outstandingly rewarding. Experience the world and those around us, we only have a finite amount of days and each one should be treated as a gift to be savored. Aguaterra brings you the spirit of adventure, bottled up and ready to use.

This is it. This is Aguaterra.

This past weekend, the founders of Aguaterra decided to get back to nature. We have a friend in our neighborhood that I went to college with during my years in New York City, and she came up with the brilliant idea to head to the shore for some good old fashioned camping! We had moved here almost three months ago and still had not taken the time to break free and explore beyond our local hiking trails and such, so this was all long overdue.

friendsandlove.jpg

So we all got up early the next day, packed up our bags (and the puppies of course), and hit the road!

Once we arrived, we set up our tents and camp just as the sky was beginning to catch fire with the promise of a colorful sunset. Walking towards the declining sun, we were suddenly at the edge of the sandstone bluffs, where the vast ocean crashes against the earth. As if the view was too much to take in, I closed my eyes and did my best to absorb the secondary details of the scene first. Listening to the rhythmic pounding against the rocks far below, feeling the wind run across my face and pull my hair back behind my head. I opened my eyes again, more prepared for the wonder before me.

This is it. I thought to myself. This was why we started Aguaterra. This very scene was what inspired us in the first place, only we had yet to see it for ourselves. Well, at least together, and in person.

The ocean beating against the land, making only the smallest of dents, will eventually reshape the land, and yet it will take into itself essential fragments of it. The two are inseparable, and separate. Just like us, just like everything.

Aguaterra brings you balance, strength, and harmony. Not just products made from the land and sea, but a lifestyle that embodies them.

Coconut Oil and the Wonder Fat

Coconut Oil and the Wonder Fat

Well it’s #NationalNutDay, which inspired us to share with you all some of the studies behind coconut oil and its marvelous skincare benefits.

Exotic in nature, and often used exclusively for cooking, coconut oil has way more potential than making a healthy meal. In fact for the longest time, coconut oil was considered one of the worst oils to consume out there, because of its high saturated fat content. Coconut oil is made up of almost 90% saturated fats, but what most people don’t know is that the saturated fats in coconut oil are called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). Which are metabolized differently than typical saturated fats with long chained triglycerides. Medium chains are used for fast energy, that yields a far greater energy expenditure. Resulting in greater amounts of calories burned and rapid fat loss for the consumer.

Fifty percent of the fatty acids in coconut oil contain Lauric Acid, which is known to for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. When coconut oil is applied topically, it kills bacteria and moisturizes simultaneously! Leaving the skin clear of pathogens and glowing with moisture. This balances natural lipid moisture levels, instead of moisturizing through chemicals which train the skin to produce less moisture on its own. Leaving you with constant dry and cracked skin.

Aguaterra products are almost all based in coconut oil. Providing natural moisture and even prevention of damage or infection. Check out our Stress Relieving Body Cream!

Coffee. The Magical Bean.

Coffee. The Magical Bean.

Coffee has been one of our go-to morning beverages for centuries. Packed with caffeine to help wake the mind and help one be alert through the morning, but what if someone told you that it can have amazing benefits for the skin too?!?

The coffee bean is a rich source of antioxidants that protect and bolster the skin's natural ability to defend itself from free-radicals and environmental damage, especially the sun. Exposure to the environment hastens aging and destroys skin cells however the use of coffee based extracts can inhibit the DNA damage response from the harsh sun-radiation, reducing the risk of cancer and skin-related issues.

Caffeine acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing swelling and redness from inflammation. Making eye creams particularly effective in the reduction of bags under the eyes. Vasoconstrictors also do wonders in temporarily smoothing away cellulite, increasing circulation with tighter veins helps tone and tighten skin tissues. And if all of that isn’t enough to convince you, it makes for a healthy exfoliant that won’t scratch or irritate the skin, effectively removing dead skin cells so that moisturizers and nutrients from oils can go to work on your skin. Leaving skin firm and smooth. Check out our Coffee Infused Eye Salve!

Greentea. Not Just For Sipping.

Recently, I have picked up the habit of brewing a mug of green tea before starting my day. But only after reading up on the tons of health benefits that a daily cup of tea can bring to our overall health. So of course, being a maker of skincare products, I had to research ways to bring these amazing benefits to my products.

Pumpkin Spice. Basically the Best.

Pumpkin Spice. Basically the Best.

What is it about fall that everyone, myself included, loves so much? I've been told it has something to do with the change of seasons and that 'feeling in the air' that only exists when the year is coming to an end. Suddenly pumpkins are popping up everywhere and the trees trade their vibrant green for a rustic range of reds and oranges. It's a feeling that change is coming, which most of us find exciting! All the holidays are just around the corner and that means holiday treats...

Which leads us to pumpkin spice. Made from simple ingredients: cinnamon, ginger, clove, allspice, and nutmeg. Which can be added to just about anything to give us that pumpkin spiced goodness.

But why has pumpkin spice become such a phenomenon? Nostalgia. When I bite into a piece of pumpkin pie, it transports me to that first piece I can remember... Sitting at my grandma's dining table, full from dinner, and yet there's magically room for more. Some say it's all Starbucks' fault, and true they have  a team of marketing masterminds, but those same minds didn't do half as well when it comes to other holiday flavors. There is just something about pumpkin spice that fills us with warmth.

So now that it's time to get ready for the holidays, let's light those candles and sip some lattes! #aguaterra #pumpkinspoce

Kelp. Our Underwater Friend.

Kelp. Our Underwater Friend.

Makers of remedies and skincare treatments have been turning to the sea for centuries. Our planet's five oceans are brimming with nutrients that we can harness to rejuvenate and repair our damaged and dry skin. Kelp, is truly our best undersea friend.

Kelp Plants are actually massive structures made from billions of tiny micro-organisms living together in a colony. Belonging to the brown algae family, kelp is packed with nutrients that are necessary for the brown algae to survive such a harsh and ever-changing environment. Making kelp a miracle worker on damaged skin. Naturally rich in Chlorophyll, Folic Acid, AND bringing you Vitamins A, B12, D and Iodine! B12 does wonders for the nervous system, which means a lot for your skin. Calm nerves leads to calm skin!

Kelp literally reorganizes the molecules that make up our cell membranes, repairing damages and stopping inflammation. THEN it further protects our skin from damaging free radicals, which accelerate the aging process and destroy collagen (as well as many other dangers!). So obviously kelp based products end up slowing the effects of aging on the skin, which means adding it to your regimen can greatly reduce further skin damage and aid in healing.

Ãguaterra's Detoxifying Kelp Mask may just be that product to add! Used once a week, and only for 2-5 minutes, this mask is made from three simple ingredients. Aloe, Peppermint Essential Oil, and Kelp. The aloe works with the kelp to heal and reverse the effects of sun damage as well as the normal stresses of life, leaving your skin fresh and lively. The peppermint oil adds an intense cooling sensation that dissolves dirty oils and harmful particles you encounter during the day. Rosewater. The Skincare Hero.

Rosewater. The Skincare Hero.

Rosewater is the unsung hero of the organic skincare world. It has so many skin enhancing properties, you wouldn't believe!

Made from plain old water, and Rosa Damascena (rose essential oil), it makes for a powerfully simple face cleanser and toner. Dermatologist recommend the use of rosewater for a gentle alternative to treating acne. Too often are harsh soaps, and chemicals, confused for being good for the skin. When in the long term, they throw off the body's natural ability to keep moisture levels in check. When you strip away oil from the skin, it will reciprocate with producing even more oils than necessary. Resulting in oily skin. When you use oil based cleansers, much like cleaning a brush when oil painting, you are dissolving dirt and bacteria with naturally anti-bacterial oils. Which never strips moisture away, instead they soothe and clean the skin without throwing the skin out of balance. Leading to clear skin.

But thats not all, it can be used as an alcohol free makeup remover, a hair conditioner, eye brightener, and even aftershave. It has much of the same vasco-constricting properties that are found in Witch Hazel, which removes puffiness and inflammation. And on top of all that, it smells absolutely DIVINE! Add it to your bath for a wonderfully soothing soak, leaking your skin fresh and rejuvenated!

Ãguaterra Products often feature rosewater as one of the key ingredients, for example our Coffee Infused Eye Salve!

Peppermint. The Miracle Herb.

The most obvious of the mint varieties, peppermint has been used in an array of flavors and scents all promoting its freshness. Well it doesn't just freshen your breath, peppermint can do so much more!

Mint has been one of the most valued of medicinal herbs for centuries! It was cultivated by the Ancient Egyptians, and can be found in medicinal writings all around the globe from the very beginnings of human history. And since then, it has been known to soothe nausea, wake the senses, clear congestion, and soothe overworked muscles. The inhalation of peppermint is even known to help curb the appetite! Creating a sense of fullness and satisfaction. During the summer it helps provide a cooling relief from burns and damage from the sun, and in flu-season it provides sweet release from some of those uncomfortable sinus and respiratory symptoms. Truly making this a wonder-herb!

Many of our products are made with this magical essential oil. Relieving stress, illness, and bringing you balance.
